Dashain

One of the greatest festivals of Nepalese, Dashain ( in Nepali, बडा दशैं) is also well known as Vijaya Dashami. It is the most awaited festival and is of great importance. To celebrate this majestic festival, Nepalese gather together and all the people who work far away from home also return to their homes. The family members share happiness and spend good times together. Schools, Colleges and Offices also remain closed during the time of celebration.

Dashain is celebrated in the recognition of victory of the good over evil. As per the Hindu mythology, the demon Mahisashura created terror in the Devaloka and then goddess Parvati took the from or Goddess Durga to destroy the demon. The war took for 10 days and on the tenth day, Goddess Durga got victory over the demon. Celebrated for 15 days, the main days of Dashain are 1st, seventh, eighth, ninth and the tenth day. In other parts of the world, it is celebrated as Dushhera as well.

Goddess Durga is worshiped. During the eighth and ninth days, animal offerings is made to the goddess. On the tenth day, the young ones receive tika, jamara and blessing from their elders. So, this festival is regarded as the festival which brings family together.

Dashain is also remarked as the festival to fly kites and play swing. With the arrival of Dashain, people start flying kites and set up swing using bamboos and jute ropes.
